Everyone has regrets. However, unless you’ve done something criminal or truly horrible to hurt someone else, then you can probably find a way to move past it and not let it plague your thoughts for the rest of your life.
While it’s normal for everyone to be kept up at night thinking about what they could and should have done, it’s impossible to live life perfectly. Anyone who says they’ve always made the best decisions is a liar.
Take a look at the following ways to move past your regrets and enjoy life to the full.
1. Know that everyone makes mistakes they regret
As mentioned, there is nobody on the planet who can claim to have never made mistakes they regret. Embarrassing yourself at a party after a few drinks or saying the wrong thing on a date and turning away a potential love interest are all things that millions of other people have done throughout human history and there’s no getting around it. While it would be nice to be able to go back and not make those mistakes, it’s impossible to do so, so just move past them.
2. Learn from your regrets
The best practical thing you can do about your regrets is to ensure you learn from them and don’t make the same mistakes again. A negative experience can turn into a positive one if you learn from it and become a better person overall. The errors of youth that you might stay up at night lamenting are what inform your maturity as an adult.
3. Talk to others about them
When you have a regret in your mind, it can sound a lot worse than it really is. When you tell others about it, they will most likely downplay it for you and tell you that it’s not a big deal and share their own similar regrets.
