Should You Become An Interior Designer?

An interior designer can be a creative and rewarding career. Do you get compliments on your interior design in your own home? Do you enjoy arranging homes and furniture? Are you a creative person? If you answered yes to these questions, you may have what it takes to become an interior designer. Here are some things you should know if you are thinking about becoming an interior designer.

You have to be passionate about design

This may seem obvious but it’s true. You have to have creativity and passion for spatial arrangements, textiles, colors, and architecture. If you are constantly rearranging your home to see new combinations, and getting compliments about it, you may have what it takes.

Interior design is not just design and fun

Interior designers must perform many functions. Design and colors are a big part of it, however, interior designers must also be aware of building codes, ergonomics, psychology, ethics, and history. These are all important points that make up interior design, and these factors will greatly influence the designs you create.

You need to be extroverted and social

Whilst you may have the design and colors in your head, it is important to be able to convey your vision to your clients. There’s no point in this unless your client can also see what you have in mind for their property. Moreover, you need to be able to make the clients move forward with your ideas, whilst making it seem like they are in control of the design decisions. It can be hard to balance your client’s wants with your vision.

You need to create a portfolio

In order to become a reputable interior designer, you must have an impressive portfolio. To build up a portfolio, it can sometimes be necessary to work for free or reduced rates. This is especially true for new graduates or people just entering the industry. A portfolio is a way to show that you know what you are doing, and this can only come through work experience.

These are all necessary things to become an interior designer, and if you have and can do them all, then you may just have what it takes.
