Eugenio Pallisco’s Guide to Starting an Exercise Program

So, you’ve decided it’s time to start exercising. Whether your goal is to lose weight or if you’re simply trying to get in better shape, making room in your life for exercise is a positive step. However, as fitness trainer Eugenio Pallisco explains, there’s a big difference between deciding to start an exercise program and actually doing it. Once you’ve decided to begin working out regularly, it’s time to figure out how to get started.

Below, Pallisco provides a detailed guide to help start your new exercise program on the right foot.

Schedule Time to Exercise

One of the most important keys to implementing a successful exercise program is to work it into your daily schedule. If you don’t have time set aside, putting off or avoiding the physical activity you need becomes easy. Make an appointment with yourself to exercise and treat it as a crucial business meeting that you cannot break. Pick days and times to work out each week, and stick with them. Consider starting with 20 to 30 minutes per day for three or four days each week, gradually increasing as appropriate.

Start Exercising Gradually

In Eugenio Pallisco’s experience, far too many people quit exercising after just a few days because they quickly jump into too much physical activity. It’s best to start gradually exercising to get used to strenuous activity a little at a time. If you start too fast, you’re likely to end up with aches, pains, and pulled muscles early in the process. This can result in giving up before you have an opportunity to enjoy any benefits from an exercise program. Instead, allow yourself to succeed by easing into an exercise routine.

Choose Activities Wisely

There are many different types of exercise. Choose activities that you are likely to enjoy and that fit your lifestyle. If you live in an area where it is cold or rainy for a significant part of the year, choose an activity that you can do indoors. If you wish you had a chance to spend more time outside, consider walking or running. If childcare is a concern for you, select an activity that you can do at home. If you aren’t likely to go to a gym several times each week, consider investing in exercise equipment you can use at home. You are the only person who can decide which type of activity will be the best fit for your particular situation.

Invest in Quality Gear

Don’t put yourself at risk of injury by using inferior gear or exercise equipment. If you plan to walk or run, purchase a pair of good-quality shoes that fit properly. If you do yoga or aerobics using exercise videos on ad-based platforms like YouTube, consider investing in a quality yoga mat. It may cost a little more upfront, but it will save you money in the long term by outlasting cheaper products. No matter what type of activity you plan to participate in, ensure that the gear you use is in good condition and appropriate.

Seek Professional Assistance

Before starting any exercise program, particularly if you aren’t accustomed to working out or have any health conditions, it’s a good idea to check with your medical doctor. Further, you may also want to work with a personal trainer as you implement your new exercise program. They can benchmark your current condition and provide you with tips and instructions that can allow you to make the most of the time you spend exercising.
